Hey Guys, Anyone has/had a GKN overdrive unit and it stopped working? One trip recently driving at 100kph it kicked itself out of overdrive. Now it wont engage at all. The light on gear stick just flashes. Any ideas? I'm meant to be going away this weekend and really would like it going...

I had one. I had two probs with it. the first one was the plug at the back of the control box had a dodgy pin. The female part was slightly wider than the others and would turn the overdrive off when you hit a bump in the road. Gkn sent me out a new harness and prob solved. the second one was the oil would blow out the breather on long trips which was a worry as it emptied itself out once. I put a little header tank in and that fixed that. I sold it to a mate and it was working fine for awhile and he's having probs with it. It won't disengage even at 10km p/hr. It's given him too much trouble so he's taken it out.
Do what I've done and get it chipped and put a disco transfer case in.
Hope this helps somewhat and good luck with it

I've had the unit for over 3 years now and this is the first problem I've had. I spoke to the guys at Devon4x4 and they diagnosed it as a speed sensor fault. I have bought a new one off them and it's on its way as we speak. Hopefully this will give me another 3 years of overdrive motoring!

Part came in today! Not even 5 days since order. That's service from the UK! Ritters told me the last time they had to get a sensor it took them over a month????! Will fit it tonight and fingers crossed everything will be cool.

So Dust

A couple of questions if I could Very Happy

1. What's the cost of the GKN fitted?
2. At the worst case when it plays up , does it just not engage and you're back to the normal 2500rpm at 100kmh or do you lose all drive?

I fitted over 3 years ago. I actually shipped it from the UK myself as I had a container coming over. I think from Ritters they were around $4k at the time. I'm not sure if they are making the GKNs anymore.

I can't remember where I saw it, maybe on www.devon4x4.com, but there is a new overdrive available... I'll track it down...

When the unit stopped working, the car was fine, I just couldn't engage overdrive.

I think I've seen the one you're talking about at the Ivanhoe shops. It's not as sweet as mine! Wink
